TRAILS, BIRDING Famous for its displays of spring flowers, the 214 ha Caledon Nature Reserve and Wild Flower Garden was proclaimed I 1964 on land granted for use as a park by Queen Victoria. It attracts thousands of visitors each year, many of whom attend the annual spring flower show held in September. The wild flower garden comprises a 56 ha section under cultivation, in which many indigenous tree and fynbos (heath) species are nurtured. The reserve lies on the slopes of the Swartberg mountain, from the slopes of which there are good views of the surrounding region. Vegetation consists of montane fynbos (heath), among which many different species can be identified. The most commonly seen mammal is the small grey mongoose, and the reserve is a good birding destination. Location: South-western part of the region' north of Caledon. Access: From Caledon take the clearly signposted road northwards through the town and under the N2 to the entrance gate of the nature reserve. Accommodation: None. There are 3 hotels in Caledon. Other facilities: A 10 km hiking trail; short walks; a picnic area; a tea room which is open during the spring flower season; an annual flower show. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: 07h00 to 18h00.
